The original symbol charts and color keys are visible below with no signup required. Print a working copy or read the grids on screen, then use the instructions to plan the fabric and finish.

Set up a readable working chart before the first stitch

Treat the numbered grid as the instructions and any editorial image as illustration. One marked square represents one full cross; an empty square or background dot is left unstitched. Read each chart’s own key before selecting the cotton. Suggested color names let you use your stash, but they are not a tested list of DMC-number substitutions.

Print preview matters more than printing the whole article at once. Select the pages containing the grid and key, check that every column is visible, and keep the last row with the rest of its chart. The printed square size does not determine the embroidery size: the number of chart squares and your fabric count do. If the grid is cramped, adjust print scale or orientation until the symbols are clear.

A 16-square chart area measures approximately 1.14 inches on 14-count Aida, 1 inch on 16-count and 0.89 inches on 18-count. Those are grid dimensions, including blank squares, rather than cut-cloth dimensions. Add gripping and mounting allowance for your chosen finish before cutting. Use the fabric-size calculation guide if you want to plan a different count.

Mark completed stitches on a separate working copy and keep the original key readable. If you lose your place, count back from a checked row or center reference rather than the edge of a photograph. After these motifs, try the leaf and acorn charts or the free bookmark charts. DMC’s cross stitch overview provides a useful introduction to counted fabric and the basic stitch.

AI-generated editorial illustration; not a stitch-accurate chart or a test-stitched sample. Two strands of cotton on 14-count Aida are a reasonable starting point for a coverage test; use the combination that suits your fabric and finish.

Keep the thread labels or write down your chosen colors. The color suggestions below describe the intended look, but the symbols do not depend on a particular brand. You can use one color for a monochrome version as long as you continue to count from the original grid.

Your two original symbol charts

Each letter or symbol occupies one fabric square and represents one full cross. A dot is unstitched fabric. Read the row numbers down the left and the column numbers across the top. The center of the complete chart area lies between rows 8 and 9 and between columns 8 and 9.

Keep the blank squares in your working copy; they help preserve spacing. The chart area is 16 × 16, but the stitched shape occupies less space. The photographs illustrate stitching materials and technique; use the grids below for these two motifs.

.xsp-original-chart{break-inside:avoid;margin:28px 0}.xsp-original-chart On 16-count, it measures 1 inch, or 2.54 cm. On 18-count, it measures about 0.89 inches, or 2.26 cm. These measurements do not include holding or finishing margins.

For a small mounted card, decide the visible opening first and keep enough surrounding cloth to secure the fabric. For a hoop, leave the larger margin your finishing method needs. Our fabric size guide explains why the stitched area and fabric cutting size are different measurements.

Needle resting across colorful cross stitches and the open grid of white Aida. Work the main cloud shape first, checking its left and right edges against the chart. Then count the position of each rain mark from the completed cloud rather than estimating the gap.

End a thread before a long jump across the unstitched background. A dark carry can show through pale Aida, especially after mounting. Keep the top legs of your crosses facing the same direction, and check the back before moving on to the next small group.

Stitch the teacup

Use X for the cup, handle and saucer, and o for the steam. A blue cup with gray steam is one possible palette; warm brown and cream can work too if both shades remain readable against the fabric. Test pale steam on your chosen cloth before stitching the whole design.

The handle and the space inside the cup are part of the counted shape. Leave the dots blank rather than filling them with white thread. Check the handle against the neighboring cup edge before securing the final tail, because a one-square shift is noticeable in a small motif.

Print a usable working copy

Open your browser’s print preview and select the pages containing the grids and keys. Make sure every row and column is visible and the symbols are readable. The printed grid is a counting aid, not a template to trace onto the fabric, so its physical square size does not determine the stitched size.

If your printer cuts a chart at the edge, reduce the print scale or use landscape orientation. Keep the legend with the chart. For help tracking symbols, read our chart reading guide; the same counting principles apply to these browser-printable grids.

Turn a small finish into a useful gift

Try the teacup on a card for a tea-loving friend, or use the cloud in a small weather-themed collection. Mount only after you have checked the outline and secured the ends. Our mini card mounting guide explains how to size an aperture around a small motif.

If you want a botanical alternative, use the free leaf and acorn charts. Please link to this page rather than reselling or redistributing the charts. They are original XStitchPattern motifs.

Do I need backstitch or fractional stitches?

No. Every marked square is one full cross. DMC’s cross stitch introduction explains the basic counted stitch.

Can I make them larger?

A lower Aida count makes the same grid physically larger. Enlarging the printed chart alone does not change the finished stitching size.

Cover illustration generated with AI.
