A cross stitch bookmark is one of the most practical small gifts you can make. It is quick to personalise and doesn’t require a large hoop or elaborate framing. These two original free cross stitch bookmark patterns use compact symbol charts displayed on this page. They are free to follow or print, and there are no separate PDF downloads attached to this article.
What makes a good bookmark Patterns chart?
Book size and handling matter more than the visual complexity of a motif. A narrow design, sturdy edges and a relatively flat reverse help the finished item sit inside a book without pulling against pages. Choose colours that contrast with the fabric but won’t obviously show through the reverse.
Free bookmark Patterns 1: Botanical stripe (9 × 19 stitches)
...B.B... ..BBBBB.. .BBBBBBB. ..BBBBB.. ...B.B... ....G.... ...GGG... ....G.... ...GGG... ....G.... ..G.G.G.. ...GGG... ....G.... ....G.... ...B.B... ..BBBBB.. .BBBBBBB. ..BBBBB.. ...B.B...
Symbol key: B = bloom (pink or coral), G = foliage (olive or sage green), . = leave the square unstitched. This design uses only two floss colour families and repeats a small floral form at both ends, linked by a geometric green stem. The chart dimensions are 9 squares wide and 19 high.
On 14-count Aida, the stitched part measures about 0.64 × 1.36 inches. For a full-length bookmark, centre the motif on a longer strip of cloth rather than cutting the cloth to exactly the embroidered size. You can also repeat the middle foliage rows to extend the visual line.
Free bookmark Pattern 2: Repeating mini hearts (9 × 19 stitches)
..R...R.. ..RR.RR.. ...RRR... ....R.... ......... ..G...G.. ..GG.GG.. ...GGG... ....G.... ......... ..B...B.. ..BB.BB.. ...BBB... ....B.... ......... ..R...R.. ..RR.RR.. ...RRR... ....R....
Symbol key: R = rose-coloured heart, G = green heart and B = blue heart; dots are blank. This repeating motif is designed to be read row by row, with a blank row between sections. Change the thread palette to match a favourite book or school colours.
How much Aida should you cut?
These charts only describe the counted embroidery, not the finished bookmark length. For a typical bookmark Patterns, decide on the finished outside dimensions first and then cut additional border fabric for the finishing technique you choose. For example, if your planned finished bookmark is 2 × 6 inches, a folded-and-sewn backing needs a different allowance than a stiffened edge or a pre-made bookmark blank. Check the measurements against a real book before cutting.
How to stitch a bookmark neatly
- Choose a narrow Aida strip with enough border for finishing. Prevent fraying while stitching using an edge-finishing method that suits your material.
- Find the horizontal centre of the strip and position the motif in the centre or towards one end.
- Work the symbols row by row, maintaining the same top-leg direction across all full crosses.
- Keep thread carries on the reverse short so a backing layer will lie reasonably flat.
- Inspect both sides and finish thread tails beneath neighbouring stitches.
- Choose a lining or backing appropriate to the finished bookmark, avoiding adhesive that can stain or stiffen the embroidery unpredictably.
- Finish the edges. If sewing, consider whether the seam allowance covers the outermost embroidered squares.
Three finishing options
Fabric-backed bookmark Patterns
Place a narrow backing fabric against the embroidered strip, sew the edges with an allowance, and turn or finish according to the chosen construction. This usually gives the cleanest reverse but requires enough cloth around the chart.
Frayed-edge bookmark
On some woven fabrics you can intentionally fringe the edge, but Aida can continue to unravel if the boundary is not controlled. Secure the edge first and test on a fabric offcut. See our five Aida edge finishes.
Pre-made bookmark blank
Some crafters use bookmark blanks with a protective backing. Check the internal stitchable area before selecting chart dimensions, as the advertised external size might include borders or hardware.
Should you add a tassel?
A tassel can make a handmade bookmark easier to find, but avoid heavy decorations that could damage book pages or get caught in a bag. Secure any thread attachment at the edge, not by pulling through the centre of delicate cross stitching.
How do I make the bookmark longer?
The simplest option is to add unstitched cloth above and below the motif. To keep stitching continuous, extend the repeating middle stem or add another spaced heart motif. If you change the chart, recount the total stitch length using the stitch-count size guide.
Frequently asked questions
Are these free printable charts?
Yes. The symbol grids are included on this page and can be printed from your browser. No purchase, account or email registration is required to read them.
What needle should I use?
Choose a tapestry needle compatible with your fabric count. See the detailed needle size chart.
Are the pictures finished bookmarks?
No. The imagery here is clearly identified as inspiration artwork; the counted charts are the text-based diagrams above, and no stitched-sample photograph is being represented as proof of a finished product.
